    This was one of the foundational lessons of product photography when I was in photography school. If you want to light glass you can also use two soft boxes on either side of the glass with a black background behind it. The effect is very dramatic and works well for clear class as well as wine bottles. The thing you need to remember when shooting ANYTHING is that the surface your shooting sees/picks up on the light/color of everything around it. This is most obvious when you're shooting shiny chrome, but even people's skin will reflect the color of the grass they're standing on.
