It is my personal opinion that you should never even mess with the automatic modes! Start shooting manual from the very beginning! You will learn faster and you will have total creative control over your images.

Understanding manual mode is really understanding the three parts that make up a properly exposed image. Which are: Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

Aperture is simply the amount of light that your lens lets into the camera. This is called the F-Stop. A fast lens has an aperture of say maybe f1.2. It lets in a ton of light and allows you to really isolate the subject with some juicy bokeh and a blown out background.

Shutter speed is the amount of time your sensor is exposed to the light that is let in through your lens. If you are looking to freeze the action, shoot with a high shutter speed. At least 1/250th of a second. If you are looking to do some long exposures make sure you are on a tripod. I love long exposure photography!

ISO is how sensitive your camera is to light. It is a digital enhancement of how much light is in the image. Use it carefully, if you go to high, you will introduce noise into your image.
